Women at Achieve together ‘Give to Gain’ for International Women’s Day
Sunday 8th March 2026 is International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is ‘Give to Gain’.
To mark the occasion, we spoke to women from across Achieve together about what they gain from their roles, and their experiences of being women in adult social care.
Here’s some of what they shared.
What do you feel you gain most from your role at Achieve together?
“I always feel fulfilled coming into work every day.”
“For me, it’s those specific times where the people we support, they do something for the first time or something that they didn’t think they’d be able to do or meet a different kind of milestone. That brings a lot of joy for me in my role.”
“I really enjoy seeing people grow in their role and develop .”
Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in adult social care?
“I was a bit lost as an adolescent and trying to find a way forward. My nursing career wasn’t making me happy and then I became a support worker, supporting people with learning disabilities and autism. Working as a support worker changed my life and made me so happy that I never wanted to go home and that hasn’t changed since.”
“Social care found me, I have a background in education. I love doing what I do now.”
How has working in care helped you grow personally or professionally?
“Learning to take pleasure in the small achievements that we all have in our own lives. So working with team members, mentoring them, and working with people we support. I worked with one person and supported him how to write his name and now he can write sentences and he’s so happy.”
“I’ve gained the ability to apply the skills that I’ve learned over the course of my career. The role that I’m in allows me to apply all of those perfectly for the benefit of my team and the people we support in the organisation.”
What advice would you give to a woman considering a career in the care sector?
“There are easier ways to make a living with better hours and better pay but there are no better teams and there is no greater privilege than being trusted to support the people who need it the most.”
“It will change your life and you will never regret it . You will gain another family along the way.”
“Go for it. Care is not just a job, it’s a career with real progression and purpose. Believe in your abilities!”
In one sentence, how would you describe the impact of women in care?
“Women in care combine resilience, compassion and capability to keep essential services running every single day.”
“Women in care make a significant contribution through the provision of compassionate, person-centred support that upholds dignity, promotes stability, and enhances the emotional and physical wellbeing of those in their care.”
“I think they’re the backbone of the care workforce. They bring energy, emotional resilience, fun and have a natural drive for quality, and they’re a lot of fun. Also, real. “
What is one way you will support or uplift another woman at Achieve together this year?
“Being a friendly, approachable person with ears that listen and shoulders to lean on”
“Nurture, respect, coach and teach.”
“I’ll continue to share knowledge and encourage other women who might be interested in adult social care.”
