We’re finalists at the Brighton & Hove Care Awards 2026 

The nomination recognises the exceptional commitment, compassion and expertise demonstrated every day by team members supporting adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and complex health needs. 

Vallance Gardens supports seven adults with highly complex needs, including epilepsy, dysphagia, gastrostomy care and specialist postural support requirements. The team provides person-centred support that enables people to live fulfilling, meaningful lives while receiving the highest standards of specialist support. 

The Care Team of the Year nomination reflects an extraordinary year for the home. Vallance Gardens achieved an overall Excellent (5-star) rating in its Brighton & Hove City Council Provider Assessment and Market Management Solution (PAMMS) assessment – an intelligent care assessment tool to inspect, monitor, and evaluate the quality of commissioned adult social care services. 

Meanwhile, a comprehensive internal quality audit recorded 100% compliance across more than 30 areas. The home also achieved a 100% score in its internal PMLD specialist audit. 

Equally significant has been the team’s commitment to building a positive and stable culture. Vallance Gardens achieved almost 100% team member retention and zero agency usage, meaning every person supported benefits from the consistency of familiar and highly skilled team members who understand their individual preferences, communication styles and support needs. 

Innovation has also played an important role in the team’s success. Team members participate in a pioneering TACPAC research programme – a sensory communication resource using touch and music, exploring sensory-based approaches that can reduce restrictions in daily activities. They also deliver Intensive Interaction, TACPAC and Sound Bath sessions, ensuring people supported have access to enriching experiences tailored to their individual needs. 

The impact of this work can be seen in the lives of the people supported. During a recent assessment, inspectors observed one individual who had previously required full support with eating now able to eat almost independently, highlighting the positive outcomes achieved through consistent, person-centred support. 

Feedback from families and professionals has also been overwhelmingly positive. One family member shared: 

“The people supported look so happy and the team members really look like they love it there. It is amazing to see such a vibrant and homely place.” 

External healthcare professionals have similarly praised the service, recognising the quality of support, engagement and positive atmosphere created by the team. 

This nomination is a testament to everyone at Vallance Gardens whose dedication helps people live happy, healthy and meaningful lives every day.
