Meet Steven: Building my daily living skills
Steven has been with Achieve together for over twenty years, first living at Roxby House and then moving to Applegate when it opened in 2013. Steven has made great progress during this time. However, as with everyone, the Covid-19 lockdown implemented a lot of changes and Steven really struggled to return to the routines of everyday life once the lockdown ended.
First Steps

Before lockdown, Steven enjoyed being out and about. He would catch the bus before 9am every day and spend most of his time taking part in one of his volunteer roles, usually returning home later in the afternoon. After lockdown, Steven found it harder to get back into his usual routine and became more comfortable spending time in his flat. Steven found it difficult to return to the activities he had previously enjoyed. He shared that he did not want to leave his flat after lunchtime, and at times found completing day-to-day tasks around his flat challenging.
The team worked closely with Steven to understand how he was feeling and what support would help him to feel more confident. With guidance from the Clinical Team, Steven took part in a Managing Difficult Feelings course, where he learned helpful techniques to support him during difficult moments. This helped the team talk with Steven in a calm and positive way, understand what was causing him distress, and help him see the benefits of building his independence again.
Together, Steven and the team agreed to take small steps and build these into a programme of activities based on what he wanted to do. Steven’s love of electronic gadgets also helped motivate him, especially when practicing life skills meant he could work towards buying items such as a cordless vacuum cleaner or an electronic cleaning brush for his bathroom.

Ongoing Support
With support from the team at Applegate, Steven has made fantastic progress. His routine is different to before lockdown, but the team continue to support him in a way that feels right for him, helping him build confidence at his own pace.
Steven now vacuums his flat each morning, cleans his bathroom and irons two items of clothing each day, with gentle prompts when needed. He also goes out at least once in the afternoon, even for a short walk, which supports his wellbeing and helps him stay active.
Steven is also building his independence with money. His keyworker created a visual money sheet to help him understand his outgoings and what he has left to spend. Each step is celebrated, helping Steven feel proud, confident and motivated to keep moving forward.

Steven’s Progress
When Steven feels able to leave the home, he often really enjoys the experience. At times, he can find it hard to think ahead to how positive it may feel, and staying in to watch television can feel more comfortable. With gentle encouragement from the team, Steven has taken part in activities that have brought him joy and helped him meet new people. He is proud of what he has achieved and enjoys the praise and encouragement he receives along the way.
Steven loves anything to do with media, so the home manager organised a special tour of the BBC studios for him. During the visit, Steven met Peter Levy and captured a fantastic photo with him on the iconic red sofa.
Looking to the Future
Looking to the future, Steven will continue building on the skills and confidence he has developed. He is also eager to explore his love of film and media further. The team will keep supporting him to have his voice heard, try new experiences and take positive steps towards greater independence. With the right encouragement, Steven can continue doing more for himself and feel proud of each achievement along the way.
