Steven’s early years were spent in foster care and junior hostels. At 16 he moved into Residential care and it was here that he started to exhibit behaviours that may challenge. He was diagnosed with epileptic neurological activity without seizures and placed on anti-epileptic medication that effectively managed any behaviours that may challenge. Following this Steven was diagnosed with Atherosclerosis, a calcification within his major arteries, and declined rapidly. End of life care was discussed but after six weeks of treatment where all anti-epileptic medicine was removed, Steven started to make a remarkable recovery.

First steps

When Steven first moved to Mill Hayes it was important that he was supported with a familiar and consistent team. Initially, 2 to 1 support was provided 12 hours a day with a shared night support team. Steven was supported with a positive behaviour plan with effective proactive and reactive strategies including communication, boundaries and a predictable daily routine. He was also supported to go out regularly, taking part in activities that he enjoyed.

Ongoing support

Steven loves parties and team activities with other people supported at Mill Hayes. Any behaviours that may challenge have significantly reduced over the years and he continues to achieve his goals and wishes with person centred support that uses positive risk taking to enhance his achievements. Steven often becomes anxious, usually post an event, an anti-climax effect, and it’s here where the team support him most by providing reassurance.

Steven’s progress

Steven is healthy and happy at Mill Hayes. He’s jovial and interacts with the team in a positive manner. He’s made friends with other people at Mill Hayes and in nearby homes. Steven feels confident in making choices, including his sexuality. He attended, a Gay Pride walk this year with lots of people he didn’t know, he was welcomed by all and felt included in the event.

Steven is independent, confident, chooses what he wants to do each day. He has a fabulous sense of humour, enjoys painting, shopping, theatre and most of all parties. He loves visiting airports and has recently been on an airplane (non working) to have the experience of knowing what this is like onboard.
