A new beginning: How Garthowen embraced an emergency support request

When an emergency support request came in, the team at Garthowen showed true dedication – preparing a safe, welcoming home in under 24 hours, helping someone in need settle in, thrive, and begin their journey to greater independence.

At Achieve together, we believe that with the right support and a ‘we can’ attitude, anything is possible. When an urgent request came in for emergency support, our team at Garthowen demonstrated their dedication, ensuring that the person moved in quickly, safely, and with warmth.

Responding to an urgent need

Late on a Thursday, the team received a call regarding a person in need of immediate support. His mother had become unwell, and with the weekend approaching, time was of the essence. Without hesitation, the team sprang into action.

By Friday morning, an assessment was carried out to determine his needs. In less than 24 hours, the team had transformed a room into a welcoming and personalised space. They sourced necessary items, set up safe areas, and ensured that his new environment felt like home. By 7:00 PM that evening, he had moved in – an incredible achievement accomplished through teamwork and dedication.

Overcoming challenges with a ‘we can’ attitude

Time was the biggest challenge – ensuring everything was in place for a smooth transition. However, the team at Garthowen didn’t hesitate. Their collective approach was one of positivity and action. Everyone came together to:

  • Prepare a safe and comfortable room at short notice.
  • Gather personalised items to make the space feel like home.
  • Coordinate with external teams to ensure all logistical needs were met.
  • Maintain a positive and welcoming atmosphere.

Instead of questioning whether it could be done, the team simply made it happen. They embraced the opportunity to support someone new and did so with enthusiasm and care.

A remarkable transformation

From the moment he arrived, the person began to flourish. Initially, there were concerns that he might be reserved or struggle to engage, but he quickly revealed his true personality – a sociable and cheeky individual with a love for interaction.

  • Settling in quickly: Within his first evening, he had already begun to socialise with the team and others in the home.
  • Building new relationships: Despite previous reports that he was introverted, he developed strong connections with both team members and people supported.
  • Unexpected joys: Although it was thought that he didn’t like animals, he quickly bonded with the home’s two cats and dog.

A home that welcomes everyone

What made this transition even more special was the warmth and acceptance from everyone at Garthowen. People supported welcomed him with open arms, and he blended seamlessly into daily life. His independence is growing every day, and he is making the most of the opportunities around him.

The power of teamwork

This support would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire team, including key figures such as Area Placement Manager Christina Thomas, Head of Referrals Dominic Dyer, Head of Forensic Mental Health Kevin Taylor, Operations Director Rachel Hawkins, and Registered Manager Sara Ratcliffe. Their commitment to ensuring a smooth and person-centred transition made all the difference.

Looking to the future

This story is a testament to what can be achieved when a team works together with a positive, solution-focused mindset. The person now has a safe and supportive home where he can thrive, and his journey towards greater independence continues to unfold.

At Achieve together, we don’t just provide support – we create opportunities for people to live happy, fulfilling lives. This success story is yet another example of our unwavering commitment to making a difference, one person at a time.
