Running with Roger

From the first step to the finish line, the Worthing 10k was a day full of energy, excitement and pure grit. With over 1000 runners taking part, and more than 2000 in the half marathon, the route along the seafront was full of life.

Running partners Roger, a person we support in Hove and Michael Fullerton, Director of Wellbeing, Strategy & Collaboration once again took to running a 10k together. This gave them time to reflect on Roger’s progress and experiences. Roger shared how exercise, especially walking has played an important role in improving his mental health. It has built motivation, given structure, and opened social opportunities where he has been able to meet new people.

“For me, exercise is about far more than fitness. Being active improves my quality of life, supports my mental health, and helps me feel more balanced and motivated. It also gives me the chance to meet new people, explore, and enjoy time outdoors.”

Throughout the day crowds lined the course the whole way, cheering, clapping and creating a buzz that helped carry runners like Roger and Michael through every mile. The weather also added to the day, with its warm sunshine making the beachfront a perfect setting for the route.

Roger has set clear goals for the year ahead. He wants to join a local running club, both to improve his fitness and to build friendships. He is also keen to take part in more events and is already planning to sign up for the next Worthing 10k in June.

His performance on the day showed just how far he has come. Despite the warm conditions, he kept a steady pace and showed great stamina throughout. A key highlight for him was how much of the race he ran, especially as his previous 10k events had mainly been walked. This marked a big step forward in his running journey.

Roger is a committed person who has previously completed events such as the Comrades Marathon and the Coast-to-Coast Ultra Marathon in South Africa. Both he and Michael have also taken part in the Brighton Marathon and Brighton 10k, fund raising for Brighton and Hove Speak Out, a charity close to Roger’s heart.

Overall, it was a great day, with strong support from the crowd and a real sense of progress and achievement, for Roger and Michael. The start line for June’s 10k is already in sight.
