Meet Tyrone: Building connections and embracing new experiences
Tyrone moved into his new home at Mandalay in April 2020, beginning a new chapter in his life. He had many changes to adjust to, including sharing his space, getting to know new people and building trust with the team who were there to support him. Tyrone’s History
Tyrone moved into his new home at Mandalay in April 2020, beginning a new chapter in his life. He had many changes to adjust to, including sharing his space, getting to know new people and building trust with the team who were there to support him. At the time, he needed considerable support to manage his ADHD and emotions. He sometimes experienced significant distress and tried to leave his home without support. In certain situations, Tyrone also displayed behaviours that may challenge.

First steps
During Tyrone’s first few months at Mandalay, the team took time to understand his routines, likes, dislikes and what mattered most to him. This helped shape support around his individual needs and preferences.
Through person-centred planning, Tyrone and the team developed meaningful activities together. Building trust was central to these early steps, with the team listening to him and involving him in decisions about his life.

Ongoing support
Tyrone’s support with managing his ADHD includes help to take his medication and maintain a positive daily routine. The team checks on his wellbeing and provides reassurance when he needs it.
When feelings of frustration arise, they listen and work with him to find positive ways to manage them, helping him feel safe and understood.

Tyrone’s Progress
Tyrone now feels happier and more settled at Mandalay. His humour, energy and kindness shine through, and he enjoys helping others.
He has made significant progress in managing his emotions and building positive relationships. With encouragement from the team, he is developing everyday skills and learning to communicate his needs and feelings. He is also making his own choices and doing more for himself.
To support his wish to spend time with other people, the team helped Tyrone attend a disco. This brought together his interests in music and dancing, and he really enjoyed the experience.
Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, Tyrone will be supported to explore new experiences, with his choices and interests guiding the way. He has shared his passion for football and would like more opportunities to take part in football-focused activities.
With support from the team, Tyrone will work towards greater independence in taking and managing his medication, while developing life skills such as cooking and cleaning and becoming more involved in the planning and running of his home.
