Meet Tony: Courage and determination
Tony lives in one of our specialist homes for people with sensory loss. His story is one of courage and determination, and despite losing his sight, Tony is living his best life!
First Steps
Eight weeks after the initial meeting, Tony moved from Derby down to Roper House in Canterbury. The initial six months were very challenging, Tony’s need for continuity, a trait of his Autism, made it difficult to change routines and get him moving again. With constant care from the team and regular physiotherapy, Tony was soon out of bed and weight bearing. After six months of intensive support, Tony was walking unaided.
Ongoing Support
Losing his sight was an ongoing challenge for Tony, who wanted to maintain a level of independence. Handrails were fitted throughout the property, and with support from the team and regular practice, within the year Tony was walking around the building on his own.
Tony’s Progress
Tony is now much more independent around the home and can take himself to the lounge, dining room and bathroom completely unaided. The team have helped Tony to reduce the support required in personal care tasks and the team now assist Tony rather than doing it all for him. Tony is now able to leave the home with support from the team and loves a trip the local pub or days out. He also enjoys helping in the garden, a key focal point of this home.

Looking to the future
Tony’s determined not to let his sight loss affect his ability to enjoy things. He wants to continue with his weekly trips to the pub and joining other people we support on days out and trips to town. He is looking forward to his sister visiting, she’s going to stay over in Canterbury so they can enjoy some day trips out together.
