Meet Shawn: Gaining confidence through the things he loves

Before moving to Ty Dol, Shawn lived independently in his own flat. During this time, he experienced difficulties with his mental health, as well as substance and alcohol use, all of which affected his wellbeing.

Shawn was admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act and remained there for 18 months while receiving support. As he prepared to leave hospital, the team took time to meet with Shawn, understand what mattered to him and consider the support he would need.

Together, they agreed that Ty Dol could offer a safe and supportive home where Shawn could settle in at his own pace, rebuild his confidence and begin working towards greater independence.

First Steps

When Shawn moved to Ty Dol, he received one-to-one support alongside shared support within his home. At first, being around larger groups of people could feel overwhelming, and his anxiety sometimes made it difficult for him to go outside.

The team listened to Shawn and worked at his pace, helping him feel comfortable and secure in his new surroundings. Shawn worked with a psychologist and showed real commitment by attending every session and completing the work they had agreed on together. He learnt practical techniques to help him manage anxiety in social situations and when leaving the house. These early steps helped Shawn build trust, recognise his strengths and feel more confident about trying new experiences.

Ongoing Support

Shawn receives encouragement from the Ty Dol team to manage his anxiety and take part in activities that matter to him. He now attends Crest, a charity that offers learning, employment and creative opportunities.

Combining his interests in music, songwriting and rapping, Shawn joined a group focused on expressing ideas through music. Support was gradually reduced as his confidence grew, and he now attends independently twice a week. The team continues to offer reassurance while giving Shawn space to make choices, build connections and explore other classes.

Shawn’s Progress

Shawn has made meaningful progress in managing his anxiety and is beginning to feel more comfortable around other people. His growing confidence has opened up experiences that once felt out of reach. He recently stayed with his mum in Fishguard for the first time since moving to Ty Dol, an achievement he is proud of and hopes to repeat.

Shawn has also returned to watching Swansea football matches, something his anxiety had previously made difficult. Through his commitment and the right support, he is becoming more independent, making choices about how he spends his time and enjoying activities that are important to him.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Shawn would like to continue building his independence and explore new experiences that interest him. His next goal is to travel to Crest independently using public transport, and the team will support him to plan and practise the journey in a way that feels comfortable for him.

Shawn also hopes to explore other classes at Crest, develop his music and songwriting skills, and take part in more social activities. He would like to spend more time with his mum and continue supporting Swansea Football Club at matches.

By setting goals at his own pace, Shawn can continue strengthening his confidence, making informed choices and enjoying a life shaped around the people, places and activities that matter most to him.
