Meet Michael: skills, confidence and independence
Michael who has learning disabilities and autism moved from a hospital setting into supported living at our home in Lambeth, nine years ago. He has learning disabilities and autism, and with consistent and personalised support from the team, Michael has gradually settled in and made it his new home.
The team worked closely with Michael and to ensure all support was person-centred, they took the time to understand his wishes, needs and routines, shaping his support around what worked best for him. Over time, he began to enjoy cooking his meals, keeping his home tidy, began focusing on improving his personal care and building a daily routine that worked for him.
“My stay here has been very positive. The staff are very nice, and I have got on with them very well.”
– Michael
Michael continues to build important life skills while maintaining his independence. He now self-medicates, plans his own activities, manages his shopping, spends time with friends and family, and uses social media safely. He is also developing technical skills at Southside Rehabilitation Association, which could support his future goals.

With a keen interest in computers, Michael started a course in computer repair and building, which he is thoroughly enjoying. He is also interested in modelling, enjoys choosing his clothes, has a keen eye for fashion and likes sharing his style on social media.

“Michael is doing amazingly. He has a very mature approach to issues, is confident and can articulate his feelings very well. He is intelligent, gentle, kind and caring.”
– Harold, Home Deputy Manager
Looking ahead, Michael is excited to keep building his skills and exploring new opportunities. After enjoying his computer repair course, he has started volunteering for Southside Rehabilitation Association. He would like to continue training in computers and social media, explore a suitable role linked to his interest in the Army, and enjoy holidays in different places to learn about new countries and cultures.
