Meet Luke: Sharing Smiles, Laughter and Progress
After his previous home closed, Luke moved into Merrington Grange in July 2020. Prior to this, Luke had attended a local residential school and later moved into a residential home when he turned eighteen. Luke had been living on his own in a large four-bedroom house, with two support workers during the day. When Luke initially moved into Merrington Grange, he found it a little hard to adjust to sharing a busier home and support workers with other people.
First Steps
Luke’s move to Merrington Grange took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, which made settling in a little more difficult for him. He had only seen the home from the car and first met the team while they were wearing masks, making it harder for him to recognise people. This led to Luke referring to everyone by their visual genders as either Emma or Mike. The team helped Luke to understand boundaries, respect others private spaces and feel more comfortable in a shared home. They also supported him to build positive food routines, including choosing from two different low calorie snacks each day, alongside his meals.
As Luke adjusted to his new environment, the team found practical ways to keep him and his surroundings safe. When he found things difficult, gentle distractions and reassurance was used, such as encouraging him to point out letters on posters and creating stickers based on his favourite television programmes. They also helped him use his computer both independently and safely.
Ongoing Support
Luke is thriving at Merrington Grange and is often full of smiles and laughter. He uses his now and next board to support his communication and routine and loves to go out every day with his key worker. Luke enjoys the Inclusive Club, swimming at the local pool, walking in the park, bowling, helping with jobs around the home and choosing where he would like to go on holiday.

Luke’s Progress
Since moving to Merrington Grange, Luke has made great progress with his communication, confidence and daily routines. He happily uses pictures and his now and next board to help share what he wants. Luke enjoys spending time with others, going out, joining activities and bringing joy with his infectious smile and laugh.
Looking to the future
Looking to the future, Luke will continue to be supported to enjoy a happy and active life at Merrington Grange. The team will keep encouraging his communication, confidence and independence, while helping him take part in the activities he enjoys while also expanding his exposure to new activities and experiences. Luke is also excited to explore the world and travel a bit more.
Jacci’s Thoughts
“Luke has developed so much in the last six years and while he can still find things challenging at times, the support of the team at Merrington Grange helps him to cope a lot better. Seeing his big smile and hearing his laugh makes everything worthwhile.”
