Meet Henry: how the right support helped his confidence grow

Henry moved to Rochester House in May 2024, following more than ten years at another residential home. As his needs changed, the previous service felt that it could no longer provide the right support.

During his assessment, Henry was spending time apart from others in a large communal room, accompanied by a member of the team. He spoke very little and appeared withdrawn, with limited opportunities to connect with the people around him.

First Steps

The team at Rochester House took time to understand Henry’s communication, routines and preferences, recognising that a calm and easy transition would be important in helping him feel safe, comfortable and understood in his new home.

Henry’s mum was understandably unsure whether Rochester House would be the right home for him. The team supported the transition by offering consistent reassurance and giving Henry time to build trust at his own pace.

Before long, Henry’s mum was amazed to hear him speaking more and see him engaging with others. Henry receives one-to-one support throughout the day, shaped around what matters to him. By learning how he communicates and recognising when he needs space, the team has developed a clearer understanding of his likes, dislikes, goals and wishes.

His familiar routine is respected, helping him feel secure and make choices about how he spends his time. This calm, consistent approach has helped Henry settle confidently.

Ongoing Support

Henry now feels settled at Rochester House and says he enjoys living there. He receives one-to-one support that helps him take part in everyday activities while maintaining his preferred routine. Each week, he goes food shopping and chooses the items he would like.

In his free time, Henry enjoys anything to do with Thomas the Tank Engine and shopping for magazines about his favourite subjects. He also likes visiting the park, where he can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and nature.

Henry’s Progress

Since moving to Rochester House, Henry’s quality of life has improved significantly. He is more involved in decisions about his daily life and in the running of the home. He now socialises with the other people we support at Rochester House, helping him build social skills and enjoy companionship.

Henry is comfortable communicating and has developed positive relationships with team members. He is also more confident in sharing his preferences and taking part in daily activities both inside and outside his home. These changes show how his support has helped him feel included, valued and relaxed in his home environment.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Henry is excited to plan a special visit to see Thomas the Tank Engine at the Spa Valley Railway. The team is supporting him to prepare for the trip in a way that feels familiar and enjoyable, giving him opportunities to make choices about the day.

Alongside this, Henry will continue building confidence through activities linked to his interests, including trains, reading and time outdoors. His support will remain centred on his communication, preferred routines and personal goals.

The team will keep working with Henry and his mum to explore new experiences at his pace, while ensuring he feels listened to, secure and fully involved in planning his future.
