Meet Evan

Evan’s diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy affects his mobility and daily living activities. Evan lived with his mother where he required significant support to manoeuvre around safely. Evan was unable to negotiate stairs, access kitchen facilities independently, or use the bathroom without support. His care was provided by his mum and by care staff during respite stays.

First Steps

Before Evan moved in, three priority areas were identified: his sleep routine, mealtimes, and mood swings, which could lead to frustration and angry outbursts if not well supported. Over three weeks, Evan gradually visited Dyke Road to meet his new peers and become familiar with his surroundings. In a PMLD home, building trust through consistent physical interaction is essential, and the experienced team supported Evan through every transition. Regular communication with his mum, including responding to every question and concern, provided reassurance throughout the move.

Ongoing Support

The team continues to speak with Evan’s mum twice a week via video calls, and she visits regularly.

Evan’s mum said, “Every time I see Evan, or he FaceTimes me, he always looks so happy. Definitely happier than he was at home. Thank you for making my boy so happy.”

Working closely with families is central to achieving the best outcomes. Evan’s mum remains an important partner in his care, sharing her knowledge of his communication and wellbeing. Her insight helps the team deliver support that is both highly personalised and effective.

Evan’s Progress

Evan’s mum got married on the Isle of Wight, and Evan had the honour of walking her down the aisle, a real highlight as Evan got to have one of the most important roles in the wedding. Evan also completed a fund raising challenge, where the team supported him to walk using his walker, wearing different superhero outfits every day. Evan enjoyed taking part and giving back to the community, he made friends, people donated money and he reached beyond his target.

Looking to the future

In the world of PMLD, success isn’t always measured by achieving new goals or milestones. Sometimes, the greatest achievement is simply living a life filled with happiness, comfort, and meaningful moments.

For Evan, life at Dyke Road is exactly that. He has embraced his home and thoroughly enjoys attending his day centre. Evan is an incredibly sociable young man whose warm smile and infectious laugh can brighten anyone’s day within seconds. His happiness is felt by everyone around him.

While some may see routine and repetition as a lack of progress, for Evan they provide comfort, confidence and joy. We celebrate what matters most to him—spending time with people he knows and trusts, taking part in activities he loves, and feeling safe, healthy, and valued. Those familiar experiences bring him genuine happiness and that is something truly worth celebrating.
