Meet Emily: Building confidence and communication through DBT
Emily lives at our supported living home in Doncaster, where she receives 24 hour, one-to-one support tailored to her specific needs.
Since moving in, she has made great progress, building her confidence, developing new skills and becoming more comfortable sharing her views. With steady support and the right opportunities, Emily has become more independent and self-assured.

First steps
When Emily first moved into her new home, she often needed reassurance when trying new things and found it difficult to share her thoughts in formal or unfamiliar situations.
Taking part in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, known as DBT, has helped Emily learn new coping strategies, communicate more confidently and feel able to express her opinions.
The team also took time to encourage Emily’s interests, including her love of Emmerdale, which led to a visit to the studios. They also encouraged her interest in all things beauty, from dyeing her hair to trying different makeup styles. Emily also enjoys choosing and exploring designs for her tattoo projects.
Ongoing Support
The team have worked alongside Emily to support her emotional wellbeing, independence and confidence in everyday life. Through consistent encouragement and person-centred care, Emily has been able to practise the skills she has learned, build her self-belief and take part in new opportunities in a way that feels right for her.
One of the skills Emily has really enjoyed developing is cooking and baking. She loves making and decorating cakes, then showing off her creations to the team supporting her.

Emily’s Progress
A big milestone for Emily was taking part in the recruitment process for a Practice Lead role at her home. She helped create interview questions, joined the interview panel and confidently asked candidates the questions she had prepared. This showed how far Emily has come in sharing her views and using her voice.
Emily has made great progress with her cooking and enjoys making her meals with help from the team. She also enjoys choosing what she would like while learning more about creating a healthy balance when planning her groceries for the week.
Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, Emily’s focus is on continuing to build her self-esteem, communication skills and independence. With encouragement from the team, she hopes to explore new opportunities, make decisions that are important to her and play an active part in life at home.
Emily has also shared that her next goals, which bring her a lot of excitement, include visiting the Emmerdale village as well as becoming more independent when cooking. She is also saving up part of her weekly allowance for her next tattoo.
