Meet Derek: overcoming anxiety
When Derek came to Achieve together his anxiety and mental health was taking a toll on his wellbeing. With positive support and time, Derek has gained confidence, independence and now enjoys a much improved quality of life.
Supporting Derek
Derek has historically suffered with his mental health and anxiety that affects his wellbeing. When he first joined us it in Pontllainfraith it was important that we helped Derek with this and the team here support him to attend a monthly clinic that focusses specifically on maintaining his health and wellbeing. Throughout his time here, Derek has become more independent, gaining confidence and now enjoying leaving the house alone up to three times a week. This is very important to Derek and provides him with a sense of belonging and connection to the local area. Derek enjoys annual holidays with his support team and has recently been supported to purchase a new vehicle, that enables Derek greater access to local services and attractions.
Derek’s Progress
Derek has been living here for over 12 years. his independence is much improved, and he now goes out of the house independently, taking part in activities that he chooses. Derek is thriving and has a great quality of life which has resulted in a reduction in his mental health symptoms and anxiety Since his favourite local pub has recently closed, Derek is being supported to find a new place to socialise. The team are helping him to explore alternative pubs, cafés, or community venues where he feels comfortable and ensuring he maintains social connections and does not become isolated. Derek is content and happy in the home and willing to accept support from the team.
Looking to the future
Looking ahead, Derek will continue to be supported to build on his independence, confidence, and community connections. The focus will remain on enabling Derek to make his own choices, maintain his mental health and wellbeing, and continue engaging in activities that support his quality of life. Derek would like to go on holiday to Tenby, giving him the opportunity to enjoy a change of environment, spend time by the seaside, and continue building his confidence in travelling and visiting new places.
