Meet David: A Positive New Start
David moved into Birmingham Road Residential Home in November 2024. Before this, he lived in a 52-bed residential and nursing home. The team found it difficult to support his specific needs and behaviours that may have challenged resulting in the administration of medication to help keep him safe. After an assessment, it was clear his prior home wasn’t the right fit. Birmingham Road felt like a much better place for David to call home, offering more personalised support and person-centred care, in a calm, welcoming environment.
First Steps

When David first moved to Birmingham Road, he needed time to settle into his new home, meet the team and get used to daily routines. The smaller, calmer environment and steady support helped David feel more comfortable. As he settled in, the team noticed fewer behaviours that may challenge, and he needed less medication to support him safely.
The team also got to know David’s triggers and what helps him feel calm, safe and understood, so they could give support that suited him best. David was given the role and title of ‘Team Helper’, which he loves, and proudly wears an ID badge which has his name, title and image on it.
Ongoing Support
Having called Birmingham Road his home for over a year now, David is thriving in the smaller, person-centred home. He is calm and settled, and behaviours that may challenge do not happen often.
In line with the STOMP (Stopping the Overmedication of People) campaign, the team focus on understanding what may be causing David’s distress, rather than using medication as the first response. This means taking time to learn his triggers, listen to what he needs and use calm, person-led support to help him feel safe. As a result, medication use remains low, and is being reguarly reviewed, in order to maintain supporting David to feel relaxed, confident and able to take part in daily life.
David enjoys being part of daily life in his home and particularly likes walks to the local park, town and day trips with the team. David also went to his first football match, which was a lovely milestone. He has built positive relationships with the team, helping him feel safe and familiar. David is now stable, content and happy.
David’s Progress
David has made great progress since moving to Birmingham Road. He is more settled, relaxed and confident in his home, with the support of a team who know him well. He enjoys being involved in daily life, especially through his team helper role, and continues to build positive relationships with those he lives with and the team. His progress shows how the right environment and personalised support can make a real difference.

Looking to the Future
David’s future is positive and stable, with his support continuing to be person-centred. David is building on the excellent progress he has made since he moved in. The home’s size, team and approach are well matched to his wishes and needs.
David is looking forward to going to watch West Bromwich Albion football matches, expanding in his helper role and planning some exciting day trips.
