Meet Anthony
Anthony moved to Olive Lane in 2022. Before this, he lived at home with his mother, while his brother supported him from a distance. Following the loss of his mother, Anthony experienced financial abuse from people he had believed were his friends. With help from his family, he moved to a care home in Birmingham. However, the home was unable to provide the specialist communication support Anthony needed, which affected his wellbeing.
After deciding that Olive Lane would be a good fit for Anthony, his brother and the team supported him to visit several times so he could become familiar with his new surroundings. With each visit, he became more relaxed and at ease, and it was clear that he was developing a sense of belonging.
First Steps
Anthony’s previous experiences meant that he was understandably anxious and quiet. Being around other D/deaf people and a team who communicated using British Sign Language helped him feel understood, reassured and more at ease. As Anthony began building trusting relationships and gained confidence in his new environment, he gradually settled into his new home.
Anthony worked alongside the team to create a person-centred support plan shaped around his needs, strengths and personal goals. His family were involved throughout the settling-in period, helping to make the transition as smooth as possible. Anthony and his family have since shared positive feedback about his experience and the difference that living at Olive Lane has made.
Ongoing Support
Anthony has lived at Olive Lane for almost four years and is settled and happy in his home. He plays an active role in shaping his support plan and meets with his link worker each month, using British Sign Language to discuss how things are going and the goals he would like to work towards.
Anthony has shared his passion for Liverpool FC, and the team helped him choose a football shirt and memorabilia. They also supported him to choose a dartboard and pool table for his room, reflecting the interests that matter to him.
Anthony is building his independence through everyday tasks, including keeping his room tidy, doing laundry and managing his personal care. He also chooses and buys ingredients to prepare his own lunches and evening meals.
Anthony’s Progress
Anthony has made wonderful progress at Olive Lane and enjoys a varied and fulfilling life. He regularly gets out and about with the team, visiting local shops and popular attractions, including Birmingham’s SEA LIFE Centre and Midlands Arts Centre, as well as Dudley Zoo and the Black Country Living Museum.
At home, Anthony takes an active role in activities that reflect his interests. He particularly enjoys gardening and takes pride in growing and watering the plants. He also joins cookery sessions, arts and crafts, film and bingo nights, keep-fit classes and reflexology sessions. These opportunities help Anthony build his confidence, explore his interests and enjoy meaningful experiences.
Looking to the Future
Anthony continues to share how much he enjoys living at Olive Lane, while his family regularly speak positively about the support he receives.
Looking ahead, the team will work alongside Anthony to help him make choices about his life and achieve the goals that matter most to him. He will continue developing his confidence and everyday living skills at a pace that feels right for him. As Anthony builds on the progress he has made, the team will support him explore opportunities to live more independently in the future, ensuring his wishes, strengths and aspirations remain at the centre of every decision.
