Learning Disability Awareness Week – Myth Busting

It’s Mencap’s annual Learning Disability Awareness Week and this year the theme is about showing the world the incredible things that people with a learning disability achieve.

The ‘Myth Busting’ theme has been chosen to smash misconceptions about what people can do and shine a light on the stigma that many still face every day.

We have published our new Employment Opportunities Guide this week. It includes stories of people we support enjoying working life and the benefits it brings. At the Autism Show in Birmingham this weekend, everyone who visits our stand will receive a link to review it. You can see it here.

Today is our Driving up Quality event in Knutsford and we are using this opportunity to bust some myths, too.

In our June wellbeing blog, Michael Fullerton talks about how important it is to be part of your community. He encourages everyone to consider this in relation to people we support. There have also been many heartwarming posts on our AchieveApp recently. These posts show people we support out and about doing things they love from horse riding and attending a disco to being immersed in a Van Gogh experience.

Michael encourages us to watch Sebastian Foreman’s (Campaign 4 Change) vlog on Being part of the community. It gives a wonderful insight from a person with lived experience of a learning disability.

In his blog, Michael also refers to the video ‘Removing the cloak of Invisibility’ showing Samir, who takes an active part in Campaign 4 Change work. One of Samir’s family members has confirmed to us just how important this campaign work is to him.
