As part of National Learning Disability Week, Wakefield Adult Services are hosting the Marie Gibb Awards ceremony at Wakefield Cathedral on Monday 15 June.

Named in memory of a local Nurse and advocate for people with learning disabilities, the Marie Gibb Award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to make a positive difference to the lives of people with a learning disability.

Grace has been working at Mellieha, our specialist residential home providing dedicated support for people with complex conditions, for over six years as a Support Worker. As an expert with lived experience, Grace delivers the Oliver McGowan in-person training in and around West Yorkshire. Growing up with a learning disability, Grace uses her experience to educate and raise awareness, and advocate for people who may not be able to communicate their needs through speech. Grace shared, “I do enjoy training and coming to work. I enjoy being with people we support, going out in general with them. I enjoy doing work.”

Our Learning and Development Facilitator Victoria Middleton nominated Grace after working closely with her and being inspired by Grace’s confidence and enthusiasm to deliver training to large groups within the organisation and externally. Victoria said, “I nominated Grace for the Marie Gibb Award as she is brilliant at what she does as a Support Worker. She delivers the full training session, which is absolutely amazing.”

The awards are an opportunity to celebrate the people across Wakefield district who make a real difference every day, and we look forward to hearing from Grace about the awards ceremony that is taking place next week. Good luck, Grace!
