England and Wales go head-to-head in our annual football event

Originally scheduled for June, the event was postponed due to the hot weather, but it was well worth the wait. Held at Halo Cwmbran Stadium, the day brought together people from homes across Wales and England for two closely contested matches.

England claimed a 3-2 victory in the first game, while Wales responded with a 2-1 win in the second, meaning the honours were shared after two exciting matches.

The perfect weather helped create a fantastic atmosphere, with strong support from Welsh homes and lots of opportunities for people to meet others, make new connections and enjoy a shared love of football.

The event was about much more than the matches themselves. For some of the England team, the experience began with a shared minibus journey to the stadium, building excitement ahead of the games and providing an opportunity to spend time together. These shared experiences help people develop friendships, strengthen social connections and create memories that last well beyond the final whistle.

The event began with both teams warming up and agreeing their tactics. The national anthems of both countries were played just before kick off.

Congratulations to Kareem, who was named Welsh Player of the Tournament following an outstanding defensive performance. Jonathan and Shane were named joint Players of the Tournament for England. Matthew and Kyle also impressed, showing great determination and enthusiasm throughout both games.

Liam, who lives in Swansea, won the Best Supporter Award.

The event reflected Achieve together’s Wheel of Engagement, our person-centred framework, which recognises the importance of physical health, emotional wellbeing, friendships, social connection and meaningful activities. Through opportunities like this, we support people to stay active, connect with others who share their interests and build relationships.
