David’s Journey: How the right support has made a big difference

Hoarding, like many mental health challenges, can make it difficult for someone to live comfortably, safely and independently.

For David, a person we support at our Supported Living in Sittingbourne, this had begun to affect his daily life in a significant way. His bedroom had become so full of belongings that there was no longer space for him to sleep in his bed. Instead, he had been spending his nights sleeping in a chair.

Hoarding behaviours can be deeply ingrained, and previous attempts to clear the space had not been successful. When Alison, the home manager, joined the home, she recognised that a different, more creative approach was needed.

Rather than pushing David to part with his possessions, Alison and the team focused on finding a solution that would help him feel comfortable and in control. Together, they agreed on a simple but effective plan.

A shed was arranged where David could safely store some of his belongings. Importantly, he was given sole access to it, and he would be the only one with the key. This helped reassure him that his items were secure while also creating the opportunity to gradually clear his room.

Working alongside David and keeping to their agreement, the team slowly made progress. Some items were carefully moved to the shed, while others that David felt ready to let go of were responsibly disposed of.

The transformation has been remarkable.

David now has a clear, comfortable bedroom and, most importantly, he can sleep in his own bed again. With brand new Elvis bedding and a space that feels calm and welcoming, he is happier than ever and incredibly proud of what he has achieved.

And the shed? Danny rarely visits it now, a sign of just how far he has come.

What started as a practical solution has become a powerful example of how patience, creativity and truly person-centred support can make a meaningful difference to someone’s quality of life.

Well done David!
