Meet Sonnee: Keeping active by the sea
As a child Sonnee initially attended mainstream school before moving to a residential school when he was 10. After school he moved into a village complex care setting, which he initially enjoyed, being the postman and delivering letters to people. After a while he became unhappy, exhibiting behaviours that made it clear he didn’t want to go back. His family supported moving him into residential care in Norfolk, but Sonnee never settled and after two years moved to Harwich House where he has been for more than ten years.
First Steps
Sonnee is a very outgoing young man and settled quickly into his new home. He loves the seaside and all that entails, the boats, the visitors, the movement of the water. Harwich House suits his personality as there is always something for him to see and plenty to do. His family were very happy for him and could see he was happy here.
Sonnee enjoyed going out most days and particularly waving at people. He likes people watching, he wants to be part of the community and take part in any activities going on. Sonnee was supported with a full activity programme to keep him active and engaged whilst getting used to the local area, activities and attractions.
Ongoing Support
Sonnee is always interested in what is going on and can often be found looking out of the window whilst at home. He is supported to go out most days, either into Littlehampton or sometimes Brighton. Sonnee has an inquisitive nature and needs engagement in a wide variety of activities. His activity planner is constantly evolving alongside some key favourite activities such as swimming and cycling. He likes to keep moving and a basketball hoop and football goal have been purchased for him to use at home.
Sonnee’s Progress
Sonnee has seen real progress whilst living at Harwich House. In his previous homes he often became unsettled after an initial period and showed signs of being unhappy. Harwich House has been the first place that Sonnee seems to really be at home. He is comfortable with his support team and other people living in the home and continues to build his confidence and enjoys taking part in activities in the local area.
Looking to the future
Sonnee is naturally active and his time is built around this. He has difficulty with his mobility so is looking to build up strength in his legs which will be helped by his swimming and cycling and taking part in more physical based activities.
Sonnee also likes to be entertained and engaged with regular outings and the team are always looking for new places to go and see things that will ensure Sonnee remains active and engaged, both physically and mentally.
