Meet Michael
Before moving into Sandylee House, Michael spent several months living with his mother at their family home after leaving his previous residential home. During this time, he and his loved ones were looking for the right place where he could build independence while receiving the care and guidance he needed. As they knew the local area well, Michael and his family were invited to visit Sandylee House, meet the team and explore whether it felt like the right place for him.
First Steps

As part of his transition, Michael visited Sandylee House several times so he could get to know the environment gradually. These visits gave him the chance to spend time in different areas of the home, meet the team and begin building relationships with the people he would be living with. He also joined his future housemates for lunch, helping him experience mealtimes, familiar routines and the friendly atmosphere before moving in.
Michael was able to start taking part in activities he enjoys, giving him positive experiences to look forward to and helping him feel more at ease. Taking these first steps at his own pace helped Michael to build confidence, familiarity and a sense of belonging, making the move feel more natural and reassuring for him and his family.
Ongoing Support
Before Michael moved in, the team received training to support his stoma care. They continue to support his medical needs thoughtfully and in his best interests, helping to ensure his stoma does not hold him back from living a happy and fulfilling life.
The team understand Michael’s likes, dislikes and preferred ways of communicating, including his now and next routine. This has helped them build a positive relationship with him and support him to move between tasks and daily routines with more confidence.
Michael’s Progress
Michael has now lived at Sandylee House for over two years and feels happy and settled with his housemates. He enjoys a busy social life, with regular activities both one-to-one and alongside the people he lives with. These include horse riding lessons, shopping trips, going out for a drink or meal, visiting Costa Coffee and spending time in local parks.
These outings give Michael the chance to enjoy familiar routines, take part in activities he likes and stay connected to the local area. He also spends time with his family which continues to be a positive and important part of his life.

Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, Michael will continue to be supported to enjoy the routines, relationships and activities that matter to him. He is also building everyday living skills, including laying the dining table and helping tidy up after meals, which his family have noticed during their holidays together. His growing sociability and thoughtfulness towards others show how much progress he continues to make.
Michael’s thoughts:
