Meet Hisham: Finding a love of gardening
Hisham’s journey with Achieve together began after moving from the family home, where he had lived with his loved ones for many years. When Hisham first moved in, he experienced challenges with communication, which often affected his confidence and willingness to engage in activities and social opportunities. As a result, he would frequently choose to spend long periods of time alone in his bedroom upstairs rather than participating in daily activities.
First Steps
Hisham’s communication difficulties made it hard for him to express his needs, wishes, and interests and created barriers to engagement. Supporting Hisham to communicate more effectively, build relationships, and take part in meaningful activities became an important focus of his initial support. Over time, team members were able to work closely with Hisham to understand his preferences, encourage participation, and help him develop greater confidence in engaging with others and the world around him.
Ongoing Support
One of Hisham’s passions has been growing his own vegetables, which he takes pride in using when preparing meals. This has helped him develop new skills, increase his independence, improve communication and take an active role in planning and preparing food.
Hisham remains very close to his family, whom he loves dearly, and the team support him to enjoy regular contact with them.
Outside of the home Hisham enjoys visiting the farm, cinema, bowling, bike club and Drusillas. He loves to go food shopping, always making a list and independently choosing items and making healthier meal options.
Hisham’s Progress
Hisham’s communication has improved considerably, enabling him to express his needs, preferences, and goals more effectively. As a result, he is engaging
more confidently with others, participating in activities, and continuing to achieve personal goals that are important to him.
He currently has green beans and tomatoes growing in our garden area and is looking forward to picking them soon!
Looking to the future
Hisham particularly enjoys cooking, gardening, and helping with household tasks. Future opportunities will focus on expanding these interests, including developing his gardening skills, growing a wider variety of vegetables, and using these in meal planning and preparation. With the continued support of his team, Hisham will be encouraged to explore new experiences, build on his strengths, and achieve outcomes that enhance his quality of life, wellbeing, and independence.
