Meet Cherry: Making progress, one step at a time

Cherry has lived in and around Slough all her life, so moving into a supported living home nearby meant she could stay close to places that were familiar to her. She moved into her new home in April 2015, having previously lived independently in a one-bedroom flat.

Cherry lives on the ground floor of her home, which she greatly appreciates due to her ongoing mobility challenges. She has four housemates, who she gets along with very well. Her new home has given her the perfect balance of independence, support when needed and security.

First Steps

The move was a big adjustment for Cherry, as she needed time to get used to a different home, new routines and sharing her space with new housemates.

The team helped Cherry feel safe, comfortable and listened to by learning what mattered most to her, helping her feel reassured and settled. Cherry had regular one-to-one time from the team in order for her to settle into her new home and routine at a pace that felt right for her.

As trust developed, she became more at ease in her surroundings, formed positive relationships with the team and housemates, and began to enjoy shared moments with the people around her.

Ongoing Support

Cherry continues to have regular one-to-one time throughout the day, alongside shared support hours. The team spend time with Cherry each day, supporting her wellbeing, independence and the activities she enjoys.

Cherry likes being out and about, especially visiting Burnham High Street, going to Sunrise Café, browsing charity shops for jewellery, exploring the town and having her nails done.

The team also gently encourage Cherry to take daily walks and stay active in a way that feels manageable for her. Cherry can experience changes in her health and mobility, so consistency is important. The team provide person-centred support and work with health professionals, to make sure Cherry has input in her own medical care as well as having her voice heard.

Cherry’s Progress

In January 2025, Cherry experienced a decline in her wellbeing and needed additional support due to an increase in behaviours that may challenge. The team recognised this was linked to changes in her health and responded with patience, reassurance and extra one-to-one support. By spending meaningful time with Cherry and keeping routines calm and familiar, they have helped her feel more settled, which has led to happier and more positive days.

Cherry’s ongoing mobility issues mean she requires regular encouragement to follow medical advice around strengthening the muscles in her legs. With daily exercise and practical guidance from the team, she has made real progress with walking. She has gone from finding a few steps difficult to walking for several minutes, which is a huge achievement. This has given Cherry more independence and opportunities to enjoy the activities that matter to her.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Cherry is excited for more trips and new experiences. She is looking forward to this year’s house trips, and the team are helping her plan a visit to Weymouth.

Cherry would also like to decorate her bathroom, enjoy more days out, take part in different activities and spend more time with her family. With the right support around her, Cherry can keep building on her progress and focus on the things that make life meaningful to her.
