March Manager of the month

This month, Boo Holmquest, has been voted our Manager of the month. Well done, Boo.

Boo is Registered Manager of three supported living homes for D/deaf and autistic people with learning disabilities plus a domiciliary care service in Hampshire.

Boo’s British Sign Language (BSL) skills and longstanding experience in the sector are invaluable in her role. She has instigated some significant changes resulting in a hugely positive impact on people that she and her teams support. Helping people to learn at least some BSL skills, has empowered them to communicate their support needs, which they were previously unable to do. Her encouragement and nurturing has brought out the best in them, resulting in ‘very happy, contented people who can communicate well and enjoy their lives to the full’.

A very hands-on manager, Boo encourages, motivates and trains her teams. However, she also manages to find time to participate in activities such as an impromptu game of cricket.

Her nominator, Catherine, says: “Boo joins in with outings and lunches when she can, as everyone enjoys her company. She is like a Mum to people we support. They often share all their happy times with her and of course lots of hugs when they are upset.

“Boo is very creative and always thinking up different ideas of how to get her message across. She is also well known for her knowledge and BSL skills and is often contacted by people for help and advice.”

After inspecting the homes last year, one of the CQC inspectors delivered the ultimate praise. They said they would be happy to have one of their relatives live there.

Networking and promoting BSL

Boo is currently studying for a level 6 BSL qualification. Over the years she has made connections with many businesses through networking and promoting BSL awareness.

Catherine adds: “Boo is a dedicated, caring and compassionate, multi-skilled and talented hard worker. She always rises to the challenge and always goes that extra mile to make others’ lives easier. She is an inspiration to us all.”

Of receiving the award, Boo said: “No matter when you think or feel your best is not quite good enough, someone is always watching and reminds us that what we choose to do is making a difference. I am honoured to have been nominated and chosen to be Manager of the month. I appreciate the recognition. It is a lovely surprise.”
