Supporting people with learning disabilities

Achieve together provides specialist support to people with mild, moderate, severe and profound learning disabilities, with associated complex needs including physical disabilities (such as cerebral palsy), autism, mental health conditions, respiratory conditions, and neurological conditions such as epilepsy and dementia.

What is a learning disability?

‘A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life. People with learning disabilities tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with others’ (Mencap)

How can we help?

As with all of our work across England and Wales, we are committed to empowering individuals with learning disabilities by enabling them to develop daily living skills and relationships, as well as increasing esteem and confidence. We focus on active listening, meaningful engagement and supporting people to lead full, healthy and active lives.

We support people with a range of learning disabilities, across the adult lifespan. People may want additional support due to their communication needs, sensory processing differences, physical disabilities, neurodiverse needs and mental health conditions.

We support people who may experience distressed behaviour or behaviours, regarded as challenging. We also support people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people who may come into contact with the criminal justice system.

In order to ensure our support teams have the skill, knowledge and confidence to support people with multiple difficulties or disabilities we have a central Positive Behaviour Support, Nurse-Led Health Promotion Team, and Forensic Mental Health Team. These teams aid a collaborative approach in working with local statutory services, and ensuring the supporting team have clear, evidence based ways of working.
