Government announces Care Workforce Pathway

Achieve together welcomes the new initiative and reflects on the success of its robust in-house training

At the start of January, the Government announced new measures to support care workers with their professional development, so they can provide the very best care to those they support. These policy announcements are aimed at bolstering the care workforce by investing in training. This aims to keep more care workers in the sector, whilst also helping them to progress and develop their skills.

It’s no secret that it’s a challenging time for all care providers to both recruit and retain team members. The Government has announced funding for the sector, plus a new Care Workforce Pathway – a national care career structure. The pathway is designed to help people working in social care to continue to build on their skills, therefore enabling them to progress in their careers.

In-house career development

Achieve together has an established and successful training and career development ladder already in place for operational team members. Called Career Adventures, it is specifically for Support Workers, Specialist Support Workers and Practice Leads. Additionally, Home Managers can take part in our in-house Great Manager Academy.

During 2022-23 this investment in team members saw more than 3,000 training events take place. Furthermore 668 people progressed to a new level in their career. One manager said of his training: “The knowledge I have acquired has improved the support we give to people and enriched the home so much.”

In July last year we received endorsement for our training and development from Skills for Care the strategic workforce development and planning body for adult social care in England. Skills for Care has been involved in developing the new Government Care Workforce Pathway.

Head of Talent and Learning, Gary Cloke, said: “As an organisation we welcome any measure that raises the profile of social care as a rewarding and fulfilling career. Every day the dedication of our team members in our 420 homes enriches peoples’ lives. Every month we are reminded of their career commitment through our shining stars, employee and manager of the month awards, as well as our long service awards.

“One of our core values is Valuing Everyone and we know that providing good quality learning and development opportunities is key. Not only does it give people confidence in their roles, they also know that they can continue to grow with us and their work is being recognised and rewarded.”
