Stoptober and more from the Health Promotion Team

The Health Promotion Team has had a very busy October with a focus on stopping smoking, breast cancer care, healthy lifestyles, menopause and more.

Did you know? Stop smoking for 28 days and you’re 5 times more likely to give up for good. The Health Promotion Team has been holding weekly virtual sessions this Stoptober to help people quit or reduce smoking and vaping.

This nationwide campaign has a multitude of resources to help people including an NHS App. Each Wednesday lunchtime the team has been providing information and inspiration on how to stop, where to go to find support and why it’s important.

Menopause and breast awareness

On 18 October they planned a drop-in session for World Menopause Day and signposted to a video plus easy read resources to explain this life stage.

It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness month. The team shared a video with BSL from CoppaFeel! plus an easy read resource from Macmillan. Both of these encouraged everyone to check their breasts regularly and know what to look for. A second easy read document from the NHS explained mammograms and what to expect.

Seasonal vaccinations

It was also time to remind everyone to make that important appointment to get a covid and flu jab. One of our Unity Representatives, Crystal, made a video to reinforce the message.

Mental health

On World Mental Health Day, 10 October, we published a wellbeing blog calling on us all to support each other to drive positive change within mental health support and services. People we support and team members were encouraged to join a meditation session to access tools to help us relax, calm and improve our mental health. Throughout this and every month, the Friday lunchtime mindfulness session has also continued.
