Meet the Manager of Supported Living Homes in Cardiff.

Meet Dominque, also known as Blue. Blue manages 3 Supported Living homes within Achieve together

We met with Dominque (known as Blue) the Home Manager of three homes in Cardiff. We wanted to know what bought Blue to the social care sector, and what she thinks makes her a effective manager.

What has been your experience in the sector?

I began my career in social care in 2015 and have always strived to progress and saw opportunities in training, so completed my NVQ Level 2, 3, and 5 in Health and Social Care with the Achive together. I then began the position of Practice Lead at a home called Vale of Glamorgan. I soon progressed to Deputy Manager, and then eventually became the Home Manager.

What do you most look forward to in your role?

Well, I have now been managing three homes within the Cardiff area since January 2022, and it has given me much to be excited for! I have enjoyed witnessing the positive changes that people we support have made to their lives, to make them happy, healthy and meaningful. It has been such a privilege to support my team and those I support to achieve their goals. Moving forwards I am looking forward to continuing to support people further, and every day is an opportunity to support someone to make a small positive change in their life. For the longer-term I’d love to develop my skills further and hope to become one day a Regional Manager.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Honestly, I enjoy every day I am at work. I am an incredibly passionate person, and I take my role very seriously as I know we have the power to improve people we support’s lives. I am very lucky to have a solid and passionate team that enjoys supporting people to achieve positive outcomes as much as I do.

What motivates you?

My team and I are a crucial part of individuals’ lives, and help them to plan their days, and become more independent. Knowing we play such a critical role motivates me.

For example, a gentleman that moved into one of my homes was at first very withdrawn and would spend most of his time in his room alone. With the dedication, determination and support of my team, he is now enjoying life to the fullest and engages in activities outside of the home.

What has been your greatest achievement with those you support?

My greatest achievements are within all the homes I have had the pleasure of managing, and that is demonstrated in the living testimonies of people supported who have become more independent and live happier and fulfilled lives.

How do you work with family members and relatives?

I work closely with external agencies that are connected to all those within my homes, as well as people’s families I believe having a strong rapport with these connections is a key element in providing the best support we can.

What are your hopes for the future?

I hope to remain in post at the three Cardiff homes I currently manage, keep working to continuously improve the support, and always strive to be better.

How do you get the best out of your team?

I believe the most effective way to get the best out of your team is to work closely with them, and always acknowledge, recognise, and resolve, if needed, anything that they bring to you. I know what is important to my team  and this is why I ensure every team member is listened to, and that I create fair and even rota based on their needs.

I know also how important it is that my team members get job satisfaction, and are able to progress in their careers. I work with my team to understand development and encourage them to take the necessary steps to achieve their ambitions.

Communication is also a crucial element, and this is why I hold monthly meetings where we all get together to voice our opinions and suggestions.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy visiting my local beach and walking my dog. I also have children and I make sure I help them achieve their aspirations in life too.
