Supporting people to vote

Photo identification is now required for everyone voting in England’s local elections in May. Here’s how you can make sure people you support are ready

Local elections are happening across England on 4 May, and you now need photo ID to vote at a polling station. If you support people who want to vote, it’s important that they’re ready for this change.

Accepted photo identification includes a passport, driving licence or bus pass. A full list can be found on the Electoral Commission website.  You will also find information about registering to vote and how to vote.

If a person supported doesn’t have any form of photo identification, they can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

The deadline to register to vote in these elections is on Monday 17th April 2023. To register yourself or someone else, visit the Government’s website https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.  Alternatively, write to your local council for a paper application form.
