Easy read and social story – Staying safe amidst the current unrest

In the wake of the tragic events in Southport and subsequent unrest in cities, we have produced two guides to help people with learning disabilities and autistic people to understand how to stay safe

People’s safety is of paramount importance to us as an organisation. This applies equally to people we support and to our team members as they go about their daily lives.

As the violence in towns and cities across the UK has the potential to continue, we want to ensure that everyone feels safe, stays safe and knows how to keep themselves safe.

Our easy read and social story, both entitled ‘Riots across the UK’ explain the news simply and effectively. They also give advice on what to do:

  • If there are riots nearby
  • If anyone faces abuse or violence
  • If anyone feels anxious about the situation
  • If anyone is approached to get involved.

If you support people with a learning disability or autistic people, please feel free to download the guides and share them widely with anyone who could benefit.

Chief People Officer Lisa Cole said: “At Achieve together, we celebrate individuality and diversity, and are committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment, in which people we support, and team members feel comfortable being wholly themselves. We wholeheartedly condemn the violent actions that we have seen in recent days.

“Some people within Achieve together will have been negatively affected by this situation; others may be more vulnerable to harassment, exploitation or feel anxious. Through supporting each other and reassurance, we are being extra vigilant to ensure that any negative effects are as minimal as possible.”
